How to Stop Being Average

3 steps to change who influences your life

The truth is, I will always be average. And so will you.

We are a tribal animal that cannot survive in isolation: it’s hardwired in us to fit into our group, not stand out, and be accepted. After all, that’s why fear of rejection is so powerful: back in the day, being rejected from your tribe and group meant certain death.

In fact, you will subconsciously adjust your behaviour, standards, and thinking to always be the average of your peer group: the people in your life that influence you with their example and with their expectations.

There is no way for you to shield yourself from people’s influence: the only way is to cut them out of your life.

We are wired to be average, and you will always be average. There is no way out.

You can use this same rule to shortcut the system, and stop being average in an “unremarkable” way. After all, that’s what’s scary about being average: staggering through life following everyone else’s input and…without getting anywhere.
