The jury keeps getting it WRONG

So you all already know that television is typically just background noise to me. I get too fidgety and bored to just sit and watch TV. But song competitions are perfect for that. I don’t have to watch… just listen.

American Song Contest is new in comparison to other competition shows of its genre, most of which, I do not watch. I hate American Idol, I never watched X-Factor, and I think I’ve caught maybe 2 seasons of The Voice (because Adam Levine is yum). I like America’s Got Talent only for one reason… MAGIC. When magic is on, I turn into a little kid. I know it’s not real, but it amazes me. And Simon Cowell… also yum. I have a thing for older British dudes, leave me alone. Adam Levine is not an older British dude but he’s a rare exception.

ANYWAY, despite hating American Idol, I DO like Kelly Clarkson. I have yet to hear a song by her that I don’t like and I think she’s funny. I also love Snoop and the combination of them hosting together is quite entertaining.

So anyway, the basic premise, if you’re not watching the show, one representative from each state and 6 U.S. territories plays an original unrecorded song, and the top however many move on to the next round (I say “however many” because like I said, I listen, I don’t really WATCH and I can’t remember the damn number). So you would think that since this is a contest and it’s all original songs, the people representing the states and territories would be previously unknown artists, giving them a chance at a music career, right?

Wrong.

Well, sometimes wrong… which is what makes it seriously UNFAIR.

There are people on there who are pretty well known. Jewel represented Alaska. Now, I happen to be someone who really loves Jewel. She’s folksy and not as well known as many other artists but actually, when I sing, she’s one of my favorite artists to sing. She’s in my range, her songs have great lyrics and tell a great story, and I just like her. But she has records.

Then there’s Allen Stone. I personally do not know Allen Stone’s music AT ALL. In fact if not for this show, I’d have never heard of him but they tell you when people are already in the music business and he is. Apparently, he’s some kind of…
