My Parents Abandoned Our Dog

A poem about Sabrina

A beautiful brown Boxer

High on a mountain top

The camper where she lived was too small for a dog

But her family made up for a lot

The Boxer’s name was Sabrina

And she loved a little girl

Almost as much as she loved her daddy

Who was always her entire world

One day, the little girl was gone

Her mommy took her far away

Sabrina stayed by her daddy’s side

Not knowing he couldn’t afford to stay

Her daddy was sad; she could sense it

And she stayed right by his side

Then one day, he put on her leash

To get in the car and ride

Sabrina loved the trip with Daddy

Unaware it would be her last

But why was her daddy crying

And why was he driving so fast

When the car stopped, Sabrina jumped out

Thinking she and daddy would play

But Daddy revved the engine

And without a word to say… he drove away

Sabrina broke two hearts that day

Her daddy and her little girl

“Maybe someone will find him,” said Dad

And the little girl said, “Sure.”

Somewhere in her doggy heart

Sabrina understands and forgives

But the story hurt the girl for years

And likely as long as she lives

The girl didn’t understand at all

Why Sabrina had to be left alone

Wasn’t there some other way

Wasn’t there some other home

She hoped someone would find her dog

And love her the way they once did

Although houses were scarce on the mountain

Sabrina may have lived

The beautiful Boxer is in heaven by now

Completely free of pain or fear

And the girl, now the woman, hopes to see her again

And hold her sweet dog near
