THE ARC OF ARTISTRY SERIES

The ‘arc of artistry’ that surrounds most stars, celebrities and notable people in fields as popular as fiction and as rarefied as physics has always intrigued me. We learn a lot about the so-called name-brand people, but we know considerably less about the various artistic people who have floated in and out of their lives at important moments in the careers of the famous.

By virtue of having been a friend of Dusty Springfield, I am an Honorary Member of several Dusty Springfield fan groups, where memberships range from a few dozen to thousands of avid Dustonians who know far, far more about her life than I do.

Dusty and I were good friends in Los Angeles in the 1980s. When she moved back to England we spoke by phone often, and I’d get the usual Dusty postcards with her large writing all over them.

I last spoke to her by phone a few months before she passed away, 2 March 1999. I’m not the person who will ever write a book about Dusty, but that photo of Dusty and June Fernihough piqued my curiosity about some of the artists and others who have known her professionally.

Wardrobe! In Dusty’s case that usually meant high drama costuming to go with her sweeping hand and arm motions, her bouffant hair, her kohl-lined eyes and that soulful, sexy, shamelessly evocative, once-in-a-lifetime voice that reminds us of everyone we’ve ever loved, lost or hoped to charm, enchant, tempt or cajole. It must have been a heady assignment for a young designer to design gowns and clothing for Dusty!
