I Get Why People Tried to Forget the 1918 Pandemic

People who lived through the 1918 "Spanish" Flu rarely mentioned it afterward. Now I know why -- pandemics make life smaller, and nobody wants to remember that.

I Got My Child Vaccinated Today

I hope I made the right decision

I got my child vaccinated today. I feel in my heart I made the right choice. It is still too soon to know if I will regret it. The pandemic has carried this tagline message to me, “damned if you do, damned if you don’t.” Because none of us really know for sure what our reaction will be, to the virus or the vaccine.

Yet, we cannot completely stop living our lives. We can’t hide out at home until the coast is clear of infectious diseases. That is just not sustainable. People have jobs. Children have to go to school.

Naturally, I worry about the increased risk of infection in a school setting, where there are so many children in semi-shared spaces. Children have a hard time distancing from one another, practicing proper hygiene, and not touching everything. Most do not wear their masks correctly. It is what it is, but I want my child to be safe.

Since the holidays, Chicagoland has experienced a surge in new covid-19 cases. This has been the first time in nearly two years of the pandemic that we have personally known so many people who have caught the virus. It’s been rapidly getting closer to home.

School reluctantly resumed this week in the greater Chicago area. However, after much dispute over the rising covid-19 cases, the Chicago Teachers Union voted yesterday in favor of remote learning for the inner-city school districts, to keep the teachers and the children safe.

My family lives in the far north suburbs, where remote learning is not an option at this time. In-person learning, with masks, and plexiglass barriers is what our suburban school district has implemented. If there is any change to their approach, it will change suddenly, as it has in the past. Until then, we wait and see.

I felt apprehensive about the schools resuming in-person learning, knowing this surge will likely continue due to New Years’ Eve gatherings, which have yet to be accounted for. My daughter expressed having anxiety about riding on the bus with children who do not wear their masks, and several other circumstances that she described would be potentially compromising during the school day.
