Play What You Hear

Ten years later, I have achieved what is conventionally known as “success.” I won’t bore you with the details, but even my wildest dreams of what the business could become have been exceeded long ago. Just as important, I have empowered a wonderful team of employees that are happy with their work. I’ve recently hired a Vice President, which has freed me up to do things like start a Medium account and write about my experiences over the past decade. I’ve been fortunate enough to play what I hear.

Throughout my life, I’ve embraced my own version of anonymity. As a child, I frequently quarantined myself in my room to sort baseball cards or read statistics in the Baseball Register. As the President of 417 Marketing, I’ve turned my back. I’ve eschewed networking, conferences, speaking engagements, and other forms of loud, high-register playing in order to play the ballads — complete with the warm tones coming though my proverbial Harmon mute. I’ve worked from home and focused on results over hype. I’ve cut the bullshit, kept my head down, and performed for the love of quality work. This has suited my personality just as well as it suited Mr. Davis.

Will I give the people what they want? What do they want? What is expected of me now? I’m honestly not sure, but I imagine it would seem right to you if I gave up working from home and built a fine office for you to visit (not going to happen). I’ve been told I should start attending conferences on digital marketing. And honestly speaking, that sounds kind of nice. I love to travel and I’m learning to love meeting new people that share my interests. Obviously I feel some motivation to write about what I’ve learned. So I’ll give that a shot.
