Outside Cats Are Fascinating

An Insight Into Their World

As a cat lover with two inside cats, let me state upfront that I love cats! I love their round faces and sticking up ears, I love their furry bodies, their quirky personalities and especially how their pupils get huge and round in the dark.

The latter quality I especially love because it reminds me that as adorable and cute as domesticated cats are, they descend from a long line of night hunters.

Night hunters need to see into the dark so their pupils dilate accordingly. In the daytime, their pupils reverse to narrow slits to adjust to all the light coming in.

Daytime hunting cats have pupils that do not reverse to slits in the light, because they don’t have to. They have normal round eyes. Look at pictures of wild cats such as lions and cheetahs.

Anyway, back to observing the cat colony outside of a house where I was house-sitting.

Their communal interactions were fascinating. Since the owner of the house was also a cat lover, she left tons of dry food and wet food for these outside cats. She also built a kind of padded dormitory for them in the garage to shelter from the cold weather.

There was Princess, a little black panther who would not come to the food bowl if any human was even within six feet away. Princess also loved tinned mackerel (how this was figured out, I don’t know) and so she got a mackerel fillet every day, along with regular cat food. Princess also never left the back yard so an igloo shelter was made for her. Princess never interacted with any of the other cats in the yard.

Oreo is a black and white cat who was one of our favorites. A very sweet natured cat that roams the back yard freely, but tends to lounge most of the day under bushes by the fence to the right side of the yard. Oreo only interacts with Roxy.

Roxy is a beautiful ginger and white cat who miraculously appears in the yard around 11 a.m. She and Oreo make a beeline for one another, rubbing cheeks and intertwining tails. They even go over to the food dish and eat together.

They spend the whole day curled up together under the bushes at the right side of the yard.
