SIU Cricket Tournaments

In India, Cricket is not a sport. It’s a Religion.

I know the line is kind of Cheesy, but it’s not an exaggeration. People have emotions attached to it. And, it’s not just players, it’s about the game. We had the maximum number of students for Cricket trials. By the way, the Cricket trial is a kind of selection process, where a player is asked to showcase his skills and based on it, he is selected or rejected for the team. The players were so good, that we had a 19 player squad instead of 16.

SIU cricket tournament. A T20 match. Played with a proper white leather ball. All protective gear on. The match was scheduled in the morning session. The maximum crowd to cheer for cricket. We were asked to bat first. Match started. We were 27/5 in the first 5 overs. The condition was critical. Then the middle order did show some maturity and took the scoreboard forward. The game looked to stabilized. At a moment, we were not expected to play even 10 overs, ended our inning at 95 after 20 overs. The score was below par and spectators looked tense. Since our lower order spent some extra time on the pitch while batting, they got a better understanding of the pitch and it reflected when the sides were changed.

We managed to curb them at 21/5 after 6 overs. Brilliantly bowled and fielded. But, maturity was not our monopoly. Their batsmen also spent some time on the field to absorb the pressure. The below-par score helped them to do so. But, they absorbed it for quite long. We were building the pressure. In the end, they lost 4 wickets.

Last over. 8 needed. Everyone on the edge. 1st ball, DOT. 2nd and 3rd observed the same. Updated score. 8 needed from 3. Just one wicket needed. 4th ball. A huge LBW appeal. Umpire nodded in ‘NO’. But became a dot ball for sure.

Now 8 from 2.

5th delivery. Two quick runs are taken. A runout chance missed for the second one.

6 from one. Feel the pressure.

The bowler bowled a slower good length. Batsman swung. And, (un)fortunately he connected. Goes for SIX. We LOST.

Call the bowler a Chetan Sharma or Batsman a Dinesh Karthik, the choice is yours. We had hearts broken but fulfilled. Confused? Well, fulfilled because we experienced a nail-biting last ball finisher. Broken; as we were at the wrong end of the encounter.

That day, I truly understood the feeling of New Zealand cricket fans.
